A portrait of the artist as a mother
Taking inspiration from Femisto’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Housewife—a poster created for the Women’s Postal Event (1975–1979)—this work mirrors the structure and intent of the original by presenting a grid series of self-images to explore the evolving identity of a mother. Through repetition and variation, the artist reflects on the multifaceted roles occupied by women who mother while maintaining their creative practice. The grid becomes a visual metaphor for fragmentation and reconstruction, symbolising how maternal identity is formed through intersecting layers of personal, social, and emotional experience. By placing herself at the centre of the work, the artist asserts agency over her representation, challenging conventional narratives of domesticity and positioning motherhood as second to her position in society as an artist.
