About this work:
This project examines the social and cultural challenges faced by new and existing mothers, questioning why the unpaid labour of motherhood is not recognized as an economic contribution to society whilst challenging the term, “ The labour of love”.
As a form of culture jamming, the artist subverts the language and structures of the job market to expose the invisibility of maternal labour. By compiling an exhaustive list of daily tasks performed by mothers and cross-referencing them with real-world job descriptions on Indeed.com, the project highlights the professional skills embedded in caregiving. Roles such as chef, carer, domestic operator, logistics manager, and crisis negotiator emerged as direct parallels to a mother’s unpaid labour.
To disrupt and critique the system, the artist created CVs featuring images of herself performing these roles and applied for over 200 jobs with over 10 CV's via the platform. This intervention challenges the economic and cultural devaluation of caregiving, forcing a confrontation between the corporate employment structure and the lived reality of mothers.
By blurring the lines between domestic and professional labor, Through satirical yet deeply personal activism the artist disrupts the norms of labor valuation and calls for a reassessment of how society compensates and supports those who raise the next generation.
