Inside-Out

About this work:

This work explores the maternal experience from the perspective of a fetus in the womb, following a narrative-driven approach that incorporates sounds from everyday life. Initially, the piece examined how a pregnant person not only carries their own identity but also the presence of another developing being and emerging identity within them. The work aimed to challenge the notion of selfhood as a fixed entity, recognizing the profound shift in the internal sense of "I" that occurs during pregnancy.
Three-quarters of the way through making this piece, The Artist went into early labor and saw it as an opportunity to enhance the work’s narrative scope. The artist extended the piece beyond the prepartum period, incorporating the visceral experience of birth itself. Carrying the narrative into the postpartum phase became integral, as the moment of birth marked the transition from a fluid, shared identity back into an individuated self—now irrevocably transformed by the defining label of motherhood.
This shift in perspective allowed the artist to move beyond simply blurring the boundaries of selfhood, instead adopt a more holistic exploration of identity. The evolution of the piece reflects the profound metamorphosis that accompanies the maternal journey, giving depth and weight to the contribution of this ongoing dialogue.
